Morrell, Benjamin (05 July 1795–1839), sealing captain and explorer, was born in Rye, New York, the son of Benjamin Morrell, a shipbuilder. His mother’s name is unknown. When he was less than a year old, the family moved to Stonington, Connecticut, on the shore of Long Island Sound, where his father began his shipbuilding career. Benjamin was a sickly child until he was ten years old, at which time, as his health improved, his interests focused on the sea.
