Chancel was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyons in 1836, where he studied under Bonnefonds. He subsequently worked with Auguste Flandrin in Lyons and Hippolyte Flandrin in Paris; as the latter's assistant, he worked on the decoration of the churches of St-Paul in Nîmes, St-Vincent-de-Paul in Paris, and St-Martin-d'Ainay in Lyons.
