Mawalan Marika was an Australian Aboriginal artist from the Riratjingu clan of north-east Arnhemland. His highly decorative bark paintings constitute an irreplaceable ethnological record of his people's customs and beliefs. On thier first expedition to the area the late 1950s, Stuart Scougall and Tony Tuckson commissioned work from him for the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Strikingly, his depictions of local legends and divinities also incorporate elements of Christian imagery, imported by missionaries to Arnhemland. Mawalan was also instrumental in encouraging women to play a more active role in the social and economic life of the community through bark painting....
