(b Pittsburgh, Feb 5, 1923; d San Francisco, Oct 31, 1999). American double bass player. He played trombone in high school, then took up double bass, and he studied both instruments at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (1949) and the Pittsburgh Musical Institute (1950). Based in New York in the early 1950s he performed and recorded with Dave Brubeck (1951–2) and Erroll Garner (intermittently, 1951–5). He toured with the singer Lena Horne (1953) and recorded as a leader (1955) and as a sideman with Toshiko Akiyoshi (1956). Ruther then went to Toronto, where he studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music (1956), played with the Canadian Jazz Quartet (1956–7) and Peter Appleyard’s quartet (1957), and taught music in Ottawa, Hull (Ontario), and Toronto (1956–7).
