(b Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, Feb 19, 1926). English writer on music. He joined the Manchester staff of the Daily Telegraph in 1941 and from 1950 to 1989 served on the music staff (as well as a period as northern editor), then becoming chief critic of the Sunday Telegraph. A percipient and prolific writer, he has specialized in English music, with sensitive, carefully researched biographies of Vaughan Williams (1964), Elgar (1968) and Britten (1980); his sympathy for the music of the early 20th century has also drawn from him valuable and balanced studies of Mahler (1974) and Richard Strauss (1976). Kennedy has also published extensively on the musical history of Manchester and musicians active there and is editor of the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music (1980, rev. 1985). He has done much to foster musical and operatic activity in the north of England....
