(b Leeds, 30 April 1937). English librettist and translator. He studied at Leeds University and worked first as an English lecturer. His first collection of poetry, The Loiners, appeared in 1972. Harrison’s verse translations for the National Theatre led to collaborations with Harrison Birtwistle. The first was the music-theatre piece Bow Down (1977), based on the ballad The Two Sisters, and the second, the ‘mechanical pastoral’ Yan Tan Tethera
