Mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorders) are the second most common set of psychiatric disorders, behind anxiety disorders. The lifetime prevalence of any mood disorder in US adults is approximately 20%, and the 12-month prevalence is approximately 10%. Common mood disorders and their treatment are discussed below. Additional information on pharmacologic therapy and electroconvulsive therapy is covered elsewhere.
