The surname of a Belgian footballer, Jean-Marc Bosman, whose case concerning contractual freedoms was heard by the European Commission's Court of Justice in December 1995. Based on the interpretation of Articles 48, 85, and 86 of the European Economic Community Treaty, the ruling introduced two significant changes: the legality of foreign player restrictions anywhere in the European Union (EU) was ended in cases of players with citizenship of an EU country; and the right of any EU player to move anywhere in the EU at the end of his contract, and with no transfer fee, was confirmed. ‘Getting him on a Bosman’ soon entered the lexicon of the football industry.
