funnel cloud

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A narrow, conical cloud that appears from the base of large cumulonimbus the central part of which is rotating (forming a mesocyclone). The funnel cloud is a vortex formed by air spiralling inward to a region of low pressure, made visible by the condensation of water vapour due to the low pressure. If the funnel touches the surface it becomes a tornado or waterspout.
