A synthetic decapeptide analogue of luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) that acts as a potent inhibitor of pituitary gonadotropin secretion. In males it reduces testosterone levels (in effect, pharmacological castration) and is used in treatment of prostate carcinoma; in females it is used to treat endometriosis and hormone-sensitive carcinomata.
