A river in north-east Italy, the scene of fierce battles between Italian and Austrian forces following Italy's entry into World War I on the Allied side (1915). Some dozen battles, in which Italy had twice as many casualties as Austria, were fought along this front between May 1915 and October 1917, culminating in the Italian disaster at Caporetto (1917).
