A multicomponent complex of proteins and lipids circulating in the plasma. Plasma lipoproteins are grouped by their densities into four classes: high-density lipoproteins (HDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), intermediate-density lipoproteins (IDL), and very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL). LDLs are about 25% protein and 75% lipid, and about half of the lipid is cholesterol. LDLs serve as the major cholesterol transport system in human plasma.
