Quick Reference
(order Lecanorales)
A genus of fruticose lichens, commonly known as beard lichens owing to their tufted, filamentous appearance and frequently pendulous habit. The numerous species are often variable and are notoriously difficult to distinguish from one another. Usnea species are very sensitive to atmospheric pollution and are found only in unpolluted, humid areas, particularly mountain woodlands.
