Quick Reference

(1837–87), English portrait photographer, born in India of unknown parentage. A founder member of the St John's Wood Clique of painters, he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, and briefly practised photography in the early 1860s, making costumed portraits of his fellow artists. He is best remembered because his famous contemporary Julia Margaret Cameron took one lesson from him, wrote to seek his help with technical difficulties, and was clearly indebted to his close-up style.
