Russell, Henry Kenneth Alfred [Ken] (1927–2011), film, television, and opera director, was born on 3 July 1927 at 31 Belmont Road, Southampton, the elder son of Adolphus Henry Russell (1902–1988), boot and shoe retailer, and his wife, Ethel Ivy Louise, née Smith. While he was still young he and his mentally fragile mother took refuge at the cinema to escape from his father's frequent rages. By the age of ten he was showing and narrating silent films in his garage to family, friends, and neighbours....
