Muirhead, Alexander (1848–1920), electrical engineer, was born on 26 May 1848 at Barley Mill, Saltoun, East Lothian, Scotland, the second of the seven children of John Muirhead (1807–1885), farmer, and his wife, Margaret Lauder. He led a solitary childhood after a fall on to his head left him deaf in one ear, and he spent much time making experiments, such as planting a poker among the cabbages to see whether it would grow.
