Dalby, Isaac (1744–1824), mathematician and surveyor, was born in Gloucestershire, possibly in the Stroud area, into a family in modest circumstances. He was one of at least three boys. He attended a local grammar school and was destined to be a clothworker but, having taught himself mathematics, was appointed assistant master in a country school where he remained for three years before opening his own school in another part of the country.
