The penultimate chapter draws on the experiences of Gypsy and Traveller youth (aged under 25) most of whom have spent all or the majority of their lives in housing. It investigates generational notions of identity and the evolving nature of spatially bounded inter-ethnic youth cultural formations. The material explores gendered aspirations for the future which, while demonstrating adherence to traditional community values, also revealed significant generational and intra-ethnic (Romany Gypsy/Irish Traveller) differences. A process of hybridization based on identification with locally based youth cultures and a process of fusion between young Gypsy/Travellers and other local youth was identified. Subsequently a notable incidence of ‘mixed’ (Gypsy/non Gypsy) relationships was observed in the study locales and the implications of these trends for the children of ‘mixed’ relationships and on the changing nature of Gypsy and Traveller community structures is elaborated in the final section of the chapter.
