Show Summary Details

This chapter examines the strategies the black professor utilized to develop the local community. Byas explains the multiple ways the professor sought the support of the community and how the school rewarded the trust of the community by generating activities believed to be in the best interests of the children. The chapter reveals the ways traditional forms of leadership were re-created in the turbulent era of the civil rights movement. In particular, Byas contrasts his perception of the norms of black parents with those of parents in the white educational communities as he experienced those differences while administrating a summer school that included white parents.
