As the next decade began, the sisters could take only a theoretical interest in the events of the antislavery movement. Also, during the summer of 1841 Weld found himself in serious financial trouble and had to borrow money. He hoped, by stringent economy measures and hard work, to put his farm in better shape and make the necessary repairs himself. He was also hopeful that he would be able to lecture again.
