This chapter discusses the importance of medical partnerships in end-of-life care. It explains that while it is easy to see how severely ill patients and their families benefit from having medical partners, the gains for medical professionals are sometimes less immediately tangible because they can earn more by providing more technologically driven care. The chapter discusses the motivations for medical professionals to become involved in end-of-life care and outlines the five critical elements of medical partnerships, which include sharing power and expertise, clarifying commonness and differences, and negotiating differences.
