This chapter discusses the history of one of the most celebrated of the ‘little magazines’, The English Review. The magazine, under the editorship of Ford Madox Hueffer, was dedicated to publishing young, unknown writers — ‘les jeunes’, as Ford called them. Its history illuminates a cultural tension about the meaning of maturity and the role of periodicals in defining and promulgating it.
