A term introduced by William Graham Sumner (1840–1910) in his 1906 book Folkways, referring to the morally prescribed and generally accepted forms of behaviour characteristic of a community or society. Sport is based upon sets of shared principles that in Sumner's sense are mores, without which the structure of competition, or the informal contract between spectator and player, would be jeopardized. Mores were contrasted by Sumner with folkways, the more everyday customs that, if transgressed, are less threatening to the social order....
