Tandem repeats of DNA sequences widely distributed through the genome that may constitute around 10% of the total DNA. The repetitive sequences may have a base composition (and thus density) sufficiently different from that of normal DNA that they sediment as a distinct band in caesium chloride density gradients. Satellites can be subgrouped on the basis of the size of the repeat region: minisatellites (variable number of tandem repeats, VNTRs) have core repeats with 9–80 bp, microsatellites (short tandem repeats, STRs; simple sequence repeats, SSRs) have repeats of only 2–6 bp. Tandem repeats are easily detectable with probes and are frequently polymorphic, so make good markers for genetic mapping, linkage analysis, and human identity testing. ...
