Mouth organ of Japanese court music. Descended from the Chin. *sheng, introduced to Jap. in 8th cent., it comprises 17 bamboo pipes (two silent) rising vertically from a lacquered wooden bowl that is held in the player's hands and in which there is the mouthpiece.
