Born to a Dutch mother and Flemish father, Jan Cox left the Netherlands in 1936 to settle in Antwerp, where he was a pupil of Opsomer at the college of fine arts. He studied at the university in Ghent from 1937 to 1941 and obtained a degree in the history of art. In 1939, he executed decorations for the Theatre Royal in Ghent. Cox exhibited for the first time in Antwerp in 1942, then in 1945 settled in Brussels, where the Palais des Beaux-Arts mounted a solo exhibition of his work. In 1956 he was a professor at the Museum Art School in Boston....
