Noël Coypel initially studied with Poussin before becoming a pupil of Le Sueur. In 1655 he finished the decorations for the royal apartments in the Louvre, a task which was begun by Le Sueur. He was enormously popular at that time. He was commissioned to provide paintings for the apartments of Jules Mazarin, First Minister of France, and to decorate the study of Louis XIV in the Tuileries.
