Thomas Flatman attended Winchester School before going up to New College, Oxford, where he failed to obtain a degree. He studied for the Bar, but does not seem to have taken up the legal profession. He was a devotee of the arts, and established a reputation as a poet, miniaturist and portrait painter. His miniature self-portrait in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is intensely expressive....
