Jan Baptist Huysmans studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp from 1843 to 1849. From 1856, he travelled in Greece, Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and Algeria and spent several years in Paris before returning to live in his native city of Antwerp.
