Valentine Prax studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers before coming to Paris in 1919. She was married to the sculptor Ossip Zadkine. Her artistic values, which were clear from the outset, were based on sound construction underpinned by deep and judicious colour. Her works are characterised by loose brushwork and her mastery of painting techniques can be judged by her breadth of subject matter.
