(b Sherman, TX, Feb 22, 1912; d Chandler, AZ, Feb 10, 2001). American tenor saxophonist and leader. His year of birth appears in many sources variously as 1913, 1914, or 1915, but 1912 (from his passport and in the social security death index) accords better with accounts of his career, because he started on alto saxophone at about the age of 12 (i.e., 1924) and had already begun his professional career by 1927, if not earlier. He worked with Terrence Holder (1930–33), Count Basie (replacing Lester Young in March 1934), and Andy Kirk (again following Young, late 1934 to summer 1935), and played with Nat Towles. In 1939 he replaced Herschel Evans in Basie’s band, with which he remained for ten years, to summer 1948. He then performed with Hot Lips Page, Lucky Millinder, and Jimmy Rushing (1950–52), and formed his own band, which was resident at the Celebrity Club in Harlem from ...
