A chemical sense that is stimulated by substances such as irritant solutions or vapours capable of exciting receptors in mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, eyes, and respiratory tract. It is mediated by the trigeminal nerve, and it accounts for the burning sensation caused by capsaicin, the active ingredient in chilli pepper. Also called trigeminal chemoreception.
