In semiotic discourse, the artistic conventions employed in visual representation which lead semioticians to refer to such pictures being ‘read’ by viewers who are familiar with these conventions. When visual representations employ aesthetic codes of realism, viewers are not conscious of decoding them because of the familiarity of their codes.
