Quick Reference

In psychoanalysis, a procedure introduced by the English psychoanalyst Donald Woods Winnicott (1896–1971) for therapeutic consultations with children: the therapist begins by drawing a random scribble on a sheet of paper, and the child responds by making it into a meaningful drawing on the basis of what it seems to suggest; and then it is the child's turn to make a random scribble for the therapist to complete, and so on, the drawings serving as points of departure for therapeutic interchanges. Winnicott's researches with the game were published posthumously in his book Therapeutic Consultations in Child Psychiatry (1971).
