Swiss painter, draughtsman, and woodcut designer, active mainly in his native Schaffhausen and in Strasbourg, where he died. He was a versatile artist, whose work included façade decorations (notably that of the Haus zum Ritter, 1568–70, now in the Museum zu Allerheiligen, Schaffhausen), portraits in a Holbeinesque style, and a large output of prints. He also decorated the astronomical clock in Strasbourg Cathedral (1571–4). His reputation in his lifetime stood very high. Several other members of his family were artists, notably his brother Abel (1542–1606), a painter and etcher.
