This chapter begins with a discussion of Plato's use of the term ούσία in a philosophical sense, distinct from that of ‘wealth’ or ‘possessions’. It discusses how Plato's concept of intelligible reality was influenced by undetected ambiguities in the use of the word ‘to be’. It concludes with some leading Platonic themes to illustrate the aspects of his thought which most effectively influenced his successors.
