This chapter by Nicolas Monteix gives a thorough reassessment of the evidence for manufacturing and retail in Pompeii, and analyses the ways in which it can and cannot be used to understand Pompeii’s economic history. The chapter starts with a very in-depth discussion of the nature of Pompeii’s archaeological record and the fundamental problems associated with it. Offering a detailed and up-to-date discussion of past approaches to the evidence for manufacturing, the author goes on to argue that traditional approaches based on quantification should be rejected; instead, he proposes approaches based on understanding investment strategies, and on analysing the système technique as defined by Bertrand Gille, alongside efforts aimed at documenting the workshops and their installations to a much more detailed level than has been done in the past.
