This chapter provides a practical introduction to the R language for statistical computing, using examples from the world of bioinformatics. The chapter begins with basic concepts such as how data is represented, manipulated and visualised within R. It goes on to explain how to write R programs to perform multivariate analysis and produce bespoke graphics. The use of add-on packages to extend the functionality of R is explained, with the RMySQL package for database connectivity and BioConductor modules for transcriptomics used to illustrate the possibilities.
