The former Soviet republics in Central Asia are suffering the consequences of decades of poor water management, uncontrolled pollutants from industrial centers, and radiation from nuclear testing. Efforts to grow grain and cotton in the arid steppes and the destruction of traditional irrigation systems and farming practices have led to desiccation of many of the area’s lakes, most notably the Aral Sea.
