Approximately 9 million square kilometers in area, the Sahara is the largest hot desert on Earth; it covers most of North Africa, and it is expanding. The ecosystems of the Sahara have been relatively little disturbed by human intervention because the climate is so inhospitable. In areas where water is available, however, such as oases, human presence makes severe demands on the limited resources.
