born in Brussels and educated in Paris, taking degrees in law and philosophy. From 1934 to 1939 he taught at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, becoming interested in anthropology and pursuing some fieldwork in Amazonia. During the 1940s he taught in New York and worked at the French embassy in Washington. Returning to Paris, he taught at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, and then as the first professor of social anthropology at the Collège de France.
