Exercises used to maintain or improve the range of motion around a joint, also known as flexibility exercises. The range of motion of a joint is determined by its bony structure, the ligaments surrounding the joint, and the associated connective tissue, tendons, and muscles. In some sports (e.g. hurdling) stretching is used to permanently increase the range of motion around a joint (such as the hip) in order to allow proper technique.
