The fashion industry is predicated on change. It is inherently unstable and seasonal. ‘Industry’ charts the history of the fashion design business in all its guises from the 14th century, through the Renaissance, during war time and peace, and into the latter end of the 20th century. The fashion media and promotions industry developed in tandem with manufacturing and design. It is hard to single out the point when clothing turned into fashion. The fashion industry today is vast and has built up credibility over time, validated by the media and an ability to express inspirations through dress in a way that connects clothing and body ideals to contemporary culture.
