Winant, John Gilbert (23 February 1889–03 November 1947), governor and ambassador, was born in New York City, the son of Frederick Winant, a real estate broker, and Jeanette Laura Gilbert. Winant grew up in a fashionable East Side brownstone, in a milieu of “politically conservative, upper middle class, protestant values and prejudices” (Bellush, p. 9), and attended private schools.
