Mann, Thomas (06 June 1875–12 August 1955), writer, was born Paul Thomas Mann in Lübeck, Germany, the son of Senator Thomas Johann Heinrich Mann, a patrician merchant, and Julia da Silva-Bruhns, to whose Portuguese-Creole background Mann attributed his artistic temperament. Adamantly averse to the German educational system, Mann barely squeaked through high school with a non-college–track diploma. After his father’s death in 1891, Mann’s family relocated to Munich the next year, and he joined them in 1894 after completing high school in Lübeck....
