Riddle, Nelson (01 June 1921–06 October 1985), composer and arranger, was born Nelson Smock Riddle, Jr., in Oradell, New Jersey, the son of Nelson S. Riddle, a commercial artist, and Marie Albertin. He inherited a love of popular music from his father, who played trombone and piano, and an appreciation of classical works from his mother, a Frenchwoman who had been raised in Alsace-Lorraine. He attended public schools in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where he studied piano from the age of eight; he turned his attention to the trombone at fourteen....
