Margaret Sarah Carpenter learned her craft by studying Lord Radnor's collection of works of art at Longford Castle. The result was a gold medal for her entry to a competition held by the Society of Artists. She came to live in London at the age of 21 and soon acquired a reputation as a portrait painter.
