A pupil of Jan Portaels at the art academy in Brussels, Franz Charlet later studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jules Lefebvre, Carolus Duran and Jean Léon Gérome. Accompanied by Théo van Rysselberghe for some of his travels, he visited Spain, Morocco and Algeria. He stayed with Whistler in the Dutch villages of Marken and Volendam.
