Any discussion of Van Eyck is inevitably problematic, for the artist and his work have always been surrounded by controversy. Jan seems to have had a brother who was a painter and who is mentioned in one or two documents as having the name of Hubert. However, the documents concerned spell the name in several different ways and, while it has been established that Jan did indeed have a brother, his name was in fact Lambert.
