Hippolyte Jean Flandrin was born into an old Lyons family who had been involved in the textile trade in the 18th century. His parents were of extremely modest means, however, not least because they had seven children. Three of the children went on to become painters, no doubt with the blessing of Flandrin’s father, who had a taste for the arts and was a gifted miniaturist in his own right....
